How Convenient

29 Apr

My desire to feed my family more organic and local foods is often in a battle with my lack of time and energy. Thankfully there is a huge industry dedicated to feeding off my mom guilt by developing thousands and thousands of organic convenience food products! As long as I can keep the job that pays the bills and causes me to be away from home  (thus the guilt in the first place – it’s the circle of life) then I can buy the few great organic products that I rely on daily.

Luckily these are carried at my regular grocery store so I do knot have to make a special trip to the whole foods.*

First off are these great nuggets by Ian’s. As much as I thought my kid would not end up eating nuggets all the time, I was wrong. And if you’ve seen or read any of the popular books or movies on our food industry you’re probably wary of the bigger brand name nuggets out there. Bonus to these is that they are delicious!

Two other staples on our pantry are Annie’s Organic Mac and Cheese and Health Valley cereal bars. Both of these are purchased weekly partially because they are our only organic options in our grocery store. However both happen to be tasty and though slightly more expensive than their non-organic versions, reasonably priced.

Sometimes I think this extra money and effort to buy these products may be a result of effective marketing on the part of the growing organic food industry and my subconscious desire to project a certain image as a parent. But even if that is the case o think it can only do more good than harm to participate in this growing movement towards eating organic.

*I love Whole Foods but I cannot go there without leaving with some kind of organic lip balm or a yoga mat or something.

“Merideth, Matt, Ann, and Al” or “What I Learned on Maternity Leave”

25 May

My maternity leave – the 8 weeks or so I’ve been on it – has taught me a few things about myself. The first being that I can become addicted to television shows in a short amount of time.
The first thing I do every morning is watch the Today Show. I am fascinated by this train wreck as it airs daily. I think I wrote about this before, but let me explain. I am amazed at the way they can segue so easily between who lost on American Idol, the Iraq war, forest fires in Florida, DNA testing of “Meredeth Viera’s dog, and a concert by the winner of the not-aging-well-award Blondie. I both detest the show and can’t stop watching it. At least Merideth Viera hasn’t hurt herself lately. Al Roker is the only one I respect. Well I guess Ann Curry is okay too, though she does strike me as the goody-goody-remind-the-teacher-we-have-a-test type. Her recent interviews with Angelina Jolie make me want to barf. I mean come on. They stretched the shiz out all week and then even leaked it into primetime. How important is she? Are you for reals Ann Curry? Are you two seriously crying during this interview? Yes. Yes you are. Right before you do the story on Rosie and whats-her-face arguing on the view.
And Matt? Don’t get me started on Matt Lauer. He has this aura of “I know I’m too smart to be on this show, but I’ll do them a favor and stay on it.”
Yet, despite this, do I still turn it on every morning? You betcha. Wouldn’t miss it.
So anyway – Lily Allen was on today singing with Blondie. Lily Allen is the bestest in my opinion. And I do love Blondie – but sometimes Debbie Harry makes me sad because she was so hot back in the day and now she’s, well, not so much. The two of them performing together was odd. Oh Debbie.

Oh my maternity leave has also taught me that I probably wouldn’t be a great stay-at-home mom. But that’s for another post. And I’m addicted to reruns of ER and Judging Amy. Oh TNT prime time in the daytime how I love thee.
And because this blog is all about the baby until I can get back to knitting – here’s another picture of Simon. Don’t mess with him. He’ll kick your ass.
